We have officially come to the point in our little three person family where spelling things out to each other has become a necessity. AJ is 15 months old now and understands a lot of what is said between DH and me. I mean, we only spell out one or two words at a time; we don't have whole arguments spelled out (now that would be something to write about!). It's actually fairly easy... now.
I don't know if you've ever gone through this but during the early days of this transition, I felt extremely stupid and illiterate (...if that makes any sense). It took me a good 5 seconds to realize DH was spelling dinner. "D----I----N-----N- OH, I see! Dinner! (cue baby stumbling into room) oh, oops."
I can tell you that after about 5 days of spelling everything, I've gradually noticed myself feeling a little competitive. Like, our communication isn't hard enough, let's make this a bit more challenging! So I've started to finish the alphabet after completing the spelling. "Honey, if she needs anything, I'll be in the b-a-t-h-r-o-o-m---n-o-p-q-r-s-t-u-v..."
It's done wonders for our marriage!
