Summer Trip to Colorado

A few weeks ago, DH, AJ, and I went to visit my parents at their mountain home in Colorado. It was a great trip! DH had to get back to work after one week, but AJ and I stayed an extra week to spend time with my mom an dad after everyone had left to go home. It was nice to get that alone time and AJ bonded a little bit with them, although she is still a little shy when it comes to anyone who isn't her parents or another baby.

Below are some pictures (only a few... I took a lot!) of the trip. 12 grandchildren total in this family!! I am so blessed to be a part of this big group of wonderful people.

MFT

Three weeks ago our family traveled 11 hours in the car to go visit my parents in Colorado. Four out of my five sisters and their families came to visit from out of state as well as my brother (who also lives in Colorado). It was a wonderful family reunion with lots of activities such as hiking, camping, playing horseshoes, and overall having fun with each other.

DH, AJ, and I stayed in the room in which I grew up. One particular night, close to the beginning of the visit, AJ was a little restless before bedtime (she is usually very good about going in her crib and falling asleep) and so I rocked her back and forth in the rocking chair holding her tight and humming. So many thoughts went through my head that night, so I wrote them down right after she was ready to fall asleep in her crib.

...

As I sit here in the chair my mother placed in my childhood room, rocking my daughter back and forth trying to get her to sleep, I can only think of when I was just a teenager in this same room wondering, "What will my life be like in 10 years?" Will I be married? Will I be one of those strong, independent, single business women that hates her love life until the goofy yet totally romantic and handsome boy-man comes into it and completely changes her whole outlook (I was on a romantic-comedy kick in those days... okay, I still am)? Will I have graduated from college? Will I have even gone to college?.... Will I still be here?

I was terrified thinking about growing up and being, "On my own." It's one of those fears equivalent to the ocean or space. It's the unknown that had my eyes water with anticipation because soon I would graduate from high school and have to figure all this stuff out.

Fast forward ten years.

Did I think I was going to be here holding my 15 month old daughter as she slowly falls asleep on my shoulder? Maybe I wished on having a baby to care for just like I've seen my older sisters snuggle up with their children, but it wasn't a real thought in my head. I couldn't imagine this feeling. I sit in this chair  in awe of what God has given me.

There were a few years, I'm sure, where my own mother was worried about where my life would take me. I was not a happy person for a while, there, and it was difficult to keep my head up above water for a year or two.

Now, ten years later I was made to be this little girl's mommy; to care for, comfort, and love her. Everything that has happened has led me here. In this same room. In this chair. Rocking this sweet creature to sleep. This is what I was put on this earth for; to be the most loving wife and mother I can be.

STL Trip

One particular weekend last month was a busy one for our little family in middle America. DH, AJ, and I traveled to Saint Louis, Missouri, where we had plans to attend alumni events set up by our alma mater. The president of the university even traveled up from Texas. We were able to visit with other alums and their families as well as spend time with DH's sister. She was a big help when it came to taking care of AJ and keeping her occupied and looked after.

On Saturday we attended a family friend's wedding who also happens to be DH's sister's high school theology teacher as well as another alum of the university (small Catholic world). It was a beautiful ceremony at the basilica in Saint Louis. AJ only fell once the entire mass (is it bad that I'm celebrating this?), granted it was a loud noise and not very joyful for anyone (I feel like I've failed at motherhood because of how many times AJ falls down). Afterwards we attended a little bit of the reception before heading downtown to the alumni event. It was a great visit and a busy day.

On Sunday we went to early mass and then got to hang out (AJ got in a 45 minute nap) for an hour or so before leaving to go to the Cardinals game (another alumni based event). I have to admit that I was a little worried because it was AJ's first baseball game. The weather was supposed to be hot and with the seats being so close together and not very much room to walk around, I couldn't help but feel nervous. I had nothing to worry about! They were great seats in the shade and no one sat next to us on our right for at least 3 seats. AJ could roam free and stretch her legs. Since the alums were seated together, we knew the people in front and behind us. It was a great game and a great day!
When we got back to the house (DH's family's house), we hung out for a little bit before DH's parents returned home from a trip they took to Ohio to visit DH's paternal grandparents. As soon as AJ's grandma walked in the door, she immediately reached for her and would not let her go. Grandma didn't mind and spent  the rest of the evening with AJ, reading to her, playing the piano for her, and keeping her occupied while Mam got everything packed up to go back home the next morning.
The next morning, we got up at 6 and left at around 7:30 (DH had to be at work at 10:30). The trip was busy and tiring, but well worth the gas and the energy. We had a fantastic time and couldn't have done it without DH's family and our friends we met through the university!

It's About time for an Introduction

I've done a different layout and put in new pages here recently. If you click on my "About" link, you'll read a quick overview of my life  in the recent years, but what you won't read is my background.
Get ready 'cause here comes a lengthy post (and I talk an awful lot about college... sorry... and also about DH and I. But aren't you interested?! :P )!

I was born in New York to two New Englanders, a Long Island, NY guy (the second oldest of 5 [with one older sister, 2 younger brothers, and one younger sister in between the younger brothers]) and a Massachusetts girl (who moved with her family [parents and younger brother] to Long Island, NY during junior high). My parents are high school sweethearts and got married in 1971 (after they attended different colleges). I am the 6th child, 5th girl, and youngest of this awesome Catholic family. I was born in 1989 (15 months after my closest sibling, sister KT). KT and I have always been close, fighting every single day for 16 years (seriously, ask my parents), and loving each other to death.  Now that we are grown-ups and living across the country from each other we don't fight as much ;)

When I was 4 (1993), my parents moved themselves and 5 of their children (4 girls and one boy) to the Philippines to do missionary work, teaching English and NFP to the Filipinos and picking up the local Tagalog dialect (Pagasinan) in the process. My oldest sister was in college at the time so she visited once or twice while we were there. We lived in the Philippines for two years before my parents decided that being raised and schooled in the U.S. was probably the best thing for their kids as well as for their sanity-- Im kidding; I can only imagine the heartbreak and challenge that went along with that decision (it was an amazing experience and even though I was "barely conscious" [as my dad would say], I remember the good times and even some hard times while living there). We returned to the United States the summer of 1995. I started 1st grade that fall and KT started 2nd. It was a wild transition, for my parents and for us, as children (with the second and third oldest attending high school).

In 1996, my oldest sister, Nutmeg, married the love of her life (whom she met in college) and her siblings were all in the wedding; KT and I were the flower girls, our brother was the altar server, and the second and third oldest sisters were bridesmaids.

In 1998, my dad began working for the Catholic church and moved our family (3 girls and one boy, since the second oldest was now in college) to the beautiful state of Colorado. KT began 5th grade, and I 4th grade, that fall.

I lived in Colorado from 1998 until it was time for me to attend college. I picked one in Texas (partly because of the heat, partly because Nutmeg, her husband, and 5 kids lived there, partly because I could play my favorite sport ever, BASKETBALL, and partly because it was a private Catholic university and I was only allowed to attend such a school out of state).

Homesickness was TERRIBLE!! Talk about depression! I arrived early for preseason Soccer (yes, I know I went for Basketball but I thought since I played soccer in high school, I'd play and get in shape for basketball) and just about died from heat exhaustion and dehydration. My body would not let me drink or eat... I was miserable.

This picture to the right is pre- mental and physical break-down from homesickness... I look at it sometimes and say, "Oh, you have no idea what's coming do you? heh heh"...

After a few months I got over it and made some pretty close friends (people I'm still extremely close with today... and one of my best friends from the first few days of pre season is now engaged to my brother! How cool is that!!!!). The soccer girls were great and once the season was over, it was basketball time. My grades sucked and because of this, I was on probation making it difficult to stay on the basketball team... so I quit.

Spring semester came around and that's when I started hanging out with DH more. He was in a relationship at the time so it was just acquaintance type "group" activities, but once we started training together for soccer (he was going to join the team Sophomore year), we hung out a lot more one on one. He and his girlfriend at the time were having problems (and by the way, she is one of the sweetest people ever and ended up attending the school a year later... great girl) so about a month after they called it quits (or was it two weeks?), he asked me if I'd consider dating him when we got back from summer vacation... I said yes, and we basically started dating that day.

Sophomore year came around and we both survived preseason and regular season of soccer. I decided to take up basketball again (my best friend and roommate at the time played basketball, too), so sometimes after my 2 hour long soccer games, I would rush to the locker room, get dressed and attend the 2 hour basketball practice. It was exhausting. I ended up leaving the team halfway through (it just wasn't my "crowd"... I guess I missed my soccer girls).

I ended up moving in with my sister and her 5 children (now she has 6) right after I got back from Christmas break and lived there for about a year and a half while I went to school. It was nice to live with family again. They welcomed me and I really felt at home. It was a tough year for me as well as for DH and I. We broke up the summer before our Junior year and it was devastating for me. In a way, however, I wouldn't have branched out and met so many people and got to experience new things if we had stayed together and for that, I am grateful.  It took me a while to get back to normal, though. I dated, he dated. I had my heartbroken and broke a couple of hearts (which I am not proud of in the least). I learned a lot about myself and I could not be more thankful for the lessons during this time of... well, me. Some things I would definitely do differently looking back, but then I wouldn't have had to deal with the consequences; and so, I guess it's good I don't have that choice to change my past.

Senior year came and went and before we knew it, we were graduating. This is funny, though. When I moved into my apartment on campus, I heard that DH and his roommate had the apartment right across the hall. Of all the places... seriously?! So we had our awkward, "Hellos",  to and from class and other activities. By the time spring rolled around we had struck up a couple conversations and it seemed like we were genuinely interested in the other's life. Right before our spring break (on a Thursday I think it was), we saw each other 3 times. I was coming back from class and he was packing up his car to drive home for break; we said "Hi."
Then I left in my car to go work out or something off campus and I don't think I acknowledged him 'cause that would've been awkward :P. Then as I was coming back from whatever I was doing, he was still getting ready to leave. So we chatted and I told him to have fun and whatever else.

3 hours later, I got a text saying, "Is it bad that after all this time I still think your freckles are adorable?"

And there you have it folks, I was hooked. We texted back and forth for a while (and every time I texted back he waited exactly an hour until he replied... he told me later when I asked him about his delay because I was annoyed with how long it took for him to text back). We started dating a couple of months before graduation. He stayed in Texas after graduating while I student taught for a semester. I moved back to Colorado that winter and DH proposed January 3rd, 2012. We married July, 2012 and moved to middle America where we received the news (in the middle of August) that we were pregnant with our first child.

Dear AJ was born April 26, 2013. and our world changed in an instant. It was a good change and something I couldn't imagine without. By the grace of God I am now a full time stay at home wife and mother to this beautiful child and my wonderful husband and I am so so so very happy to be in this place. It's a beautiful life, and now you know about it ;)

S-P-E-L-L-I-N-G!

We have officially come to the point in our little three person family where spelling things out to each other has become a necessity. AJ is 15 months old now and understands a lot of what is said between DH and me.  I mean, we only spell out one or two words at a time; we don't have whole arguments spelled out (now that would be something to write about!). It's actually fairly easy... now.

I don't know if you've ever gone through this but during the early days of this transition, I felt extremely stupid and illiterate (...if that makes any sense). It took me a good 5 seconds to realize DH was spelling dinner. "D----I----N-----N- OH, I see! Dinner! (cue baby stumbling into room) oh, oops."

I can tell you that after about 5 days of spelling everything, I've gradually noticed myself feeling a little competitive. Like, our communication isn't hard enough, let's make this a bit more challenging! So I've started to finish the alphabet after completing the spelling. "Honey, if she needs anything, I'll be in the b-a-t-h-r-o-o-m---n-o-p-q-r-s-t-u-v..."

It's done wonders for our marriage!

We have been home for a couple of weeks in a row, now, and have gotten into a little bit of a Summer Routine. While daddy works hard, Agnes and I keep busy with: (*= pictured below)

- grocery trips
- daily pool visits
- daily fountain park visits *
- weekly library trips
- weekday mass
- daily hugs and kisses for Mama Mary *
- sundress wearing *
- ridiculously cute selfie taking *
- daily dinner preparations *
- daily tooth brushing*
- walking around the apartment looking adorable (Agnes, too :P ) *
- naps
- house work
- yoga posing (not very well, but we try) *

Paul sometimes takes long bike rides in the evenings after work. Agnes never misses an opportunity to see daddy off before her bath (we have since de-cluttered that room so please excuse the mess).

We have kept ourselves busy so far and will continue to do so in the next few months with more trips to Saint Louis, Colorado, and California!
